In worthy vintages, Tablas Creek Vineyard produces small quantities of Panoplie: a Mourvèdre-based cuvée from meticulously selected grapes, made in the model of Château de Beaucastel’s Hommage á Jacques Perrin. In 2014, only 800 cases were produced.

Vibrantly fruity and spicy on the nose, with notes of herby wild strawberries, orange pith, a briny mineral note, and a grilled meat depth that will only grow with time. The palate shows the characteristic lush texture of the 2014 vintage: mouthwatering ripe raspberry and cassis fruit, deepened by some brambly spice and lifted on the long finish with flavors of licorice, wild herbs and plum skin. Built to age, this wine has so much energy that it should drink well in its youth as well. We suggest drinking for its youthful vigor between 2017 and 2020, or for its meaty maturity starting around 2024 and lasting two decades or more.

The 2014 vintage was our third consecutive drought year and saw our earliest-ever beginning to the growing season. The summer was warm but without serious heat spikes, and our coolest August in a decade slowed ripening at a critical period. When it warmed back up in September, the fruit tumbled in, and we finished in mid-October, about two weeks earlier than normal. The result was a vintage with excellent concentration balanced by good freshness, which should be vibrant and powerful young, but with the balance to age. We were harvesting all four red grapes simultaneously through September and early October: Mourvèdre between September 4th and October 2nd, Grenache between on September 10th and October 9th and Syrah between September 5th and October 2nd.
The grapes for our Panoplie were grown on our certified organic estate vineyard.
Each lot was individually fermented using native yeasts in either upright oak casks or stainless steel fermenters. After pressing, the wines were moved into barrel, blended, and aged in one 1200-gallon French oak foudre before being bottled in June 2016.
