In worthy vintages, Tablas Creek Vineyard produces small quantities of Panoplie: a Mourvèdre-based cuvée from meticulously selected grapes, made in the model of Château de Beaucastel’s Hommage á Jacques Perrin. In 2013, only 700 cases were produced.

Tasting Notes
Rich, deep and spicy on the nose with both fruity and earth elements: plum skin, new leather, figs, loam and licorice. The mouth is textured and rich with lots of dark red fruit: cassis, black cherry and plum, with a spicy sage note adding complexity. The finish is long and structured: this is a wine built to age, but bursting with energy even in its youth. We expect it to drink well for another couple of years, then tighten up for a few years before reopening around 2020 and drinking well for two to three decades.
Updated tasting notes from a January 2023 vertical tasting can be found on the Tablas Creek blog.

Production Notes
The 2013 vintage was a classic California vintage, warm and sunny, with added intensity from the low yields produced by our second consecutive drought year. The summer was consistently warm, without the heat spikes or cold stretches that can delay ripening, and resulted in an early harvest under near-perfect conditions. The net result was a blockbuster vintage, with excellent concentration and good freshness, that should offer both early appeal and the capacity to age. Our Syrah harvest began August 27th, followed by Grenache and Mourvèdre on September 12th. The last pick of all four grapes came October 7th.
The grapes for our Panoplie were grown on our certified organic estate vineyard.
Each lot was individually fermented using native yeasts in either upright oak casks or stainless steel fermenters. After pressing, the wines were moved into barrel, blended, and aged in one 1200-gallon French oak foudre before being bottled in July 2015.
