The 2022 Tablas Creek Vineyard Syrah is Tablas Creek’s fifteenth varietal bottling of the northern Rhone's noble red grape. Although most of our Syrah is used in our blends, in vintages where the Syrah grape's varietal character is clearly expressed, we reserve a small amount for a varietal bottling.

Tasting Notes

A nose with all black and mostly savory elements: iron, soy, blackberry, and pepper steak. The mouth is juicier than the nose first suggests, with flavors of blackberry and minty spice, more of the iron-like mineral note, and some serious tannins at the end. Powerful and impressive: a Syrah that could go out two decades.

Production Notes

We use most of our Syrah as a part of our Esprit de Tablas and Côtes de Tablas blends each year. However, we believe that Paso Robles is one of the world's great environments for Syrah, and in favorable vintages we try to reserve some particularly classic barrels of Syrah for a single-varietal bottling.

The 2022 vintage was our third year of drought, but because the rain that we received came early, the vines showed good health though with cluster counts down by about 15%. A cool first half of the summer was followed by our hottest-ever August and September, producing an early start and an even earlier finish to harvest. The vintage's extremely low yields produced concentrated flavors, noteworthy texture, and intense fruit.

The grapes for our Syrah were grown on our Regenerative Organic Certified and biodynamic estate vineyard.

For our varietal bottling we selected a mix of lots from newer and older oak, then blended them in June 2023 and aged the wine together in one 1200-gallon oak foudre and some smaller barrels until bottling in April 2024.
