Lignée de Tablas is a new tier of wines from Tablas Creek featuring single-vineyard wines sourced from vineyards planted to Tablas Creek clones and made in small quantities. Lignée means lineage in French, and the wines celebrate the influence of the Tablas Creek nursery and the grapevines we brought in from Beaucastel starting in 1989. We share the full story of the Lignée de Tablas program on the Tablas Blog.

The Lignée de Tablas Shake Ridge Syrah is the third red wine released in the Lignée de Tablas collection. Shake Ridge Ranch sits between 1650 and 1850 feet on steep hills near Sutter Creek, in Amador County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Farmed organically by the legendary Ann Kraemer, on well-drained loamy soils over a base that ranges from quartz and soapstone to shale and granite, Shake Ridge produces some of the most coveted grapes in the Sierra Foothills.

Tasting Notes

A high-toned nose, reflective of the high elevation of the Shake Ridge site, of blackberry preserves, brown sugar, bramble, and pencil shavings. The palate is lively and herby with black raspberry and toasted walnut flavors, and the finish shows more dark fruit and graphite.

Production Notes

The 2023 vintage began with our wettest-ever winter, replenishing ground water and delaying budbreak. It continued with our coolest growing season in more than a decade, which combined with the late start to produce a harvest roughly a month later than most recent years, beginning in mid-September and not concluding until mid-November. Warm, sunny weather starting in October allowed the later-ripening varieties to reach full maturity. The exceptionally long hangtime and gradual ripening combined to produce fruit with deep colors, remarkable intensity, and noteworthy vibrancy. We believe 2023 has all the hallmarks of a blockbuster year.

All the grapes were grown at Shake Ridge Ranch, which sits between 1650 and 1850 feet on steep hills near Sutter Creek, in Amador County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Farmed organically by the legendary Ann Kraemer, on well-drained loamy soils over a base that ranges from quartz and soapstone to shale and granite, Shake Ridge produces some of the most coveted grapes in the Sierra Foothills. The Syrah that we source from Ann was planted in 2003.

Those grapes were harvested and brought to Tablas Creek, where they were fermented, blended, and aged in neutral barrels. The wine was reassembled and then bottled in April 2025.
