In worthy vintages, Tablas Creek Vineyard produces small quantities of Panoplie: a Mourvèdre-based cuvée from meticulously selected grapes, made in the model of Château de Beaucastel’s Hommage à Jacques Perrin. In 2016, only 760 cases were produced.
The 2016 Panoplie is exclusively available to Tablas Creek Vineyard wine club members. VINsiders who reserved this wine as futures in December 2017 received their wine in the fall of 2018. Ordering the Esprit de Tablas and Panoplie "en primeur" is available exclusively to Wine Club members.
93+ Points; "Light to medium-bodied, it offers intense, savory/earthy fruits with a firm, grainy frame and good freshness, finishing long and spicy.": Wine Advocate (Oct. 2019)
96 points; "Beautiful purity of fruit, plenty of tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great finish": Jeb Dunnuck (Nov. 2018)
95-96 points; "Finishes extremely long and sweet, featuring slow-building tannins, a hint of smokiness and repeating florality.”: Vinous (Sep. 2018)
93-95 points; "Full-bodied, beautifully balanced and structurally authoritative, concluding with an intense, chewy finish.": Wine Advocate (May 2018)
A deep, inviting nose of dark red currant fruit, sweet nutmeg spice, new leather, and a little animal wildness: think drippings from a leg of lamb. The mouth is dense with black currant, loamy earth, clove spice, and powerful tannins cloaked with lush luxardo cherry fruit. A lifted rose petal floral note comes out with some air, and sweet milk chocolate notes play with red fruit on the long finish. A delicious wine with a long life ahead; we predict two decades of life, easily.

The 2016 vintage, while still marked by drought, saw better rainfall than the four previous years, and the vineyards showed good health through most of the growing season. That season started with a very early budbreak and continued warm weather spurred our earliest-ever beginning to harvest, on August 18th. But beginning mid-August, three cool weeks slowed the ripening for all but our earliest grapes, and allowed them to reach flavor and phenolic maturity with slightly above-average hang time. The resulting vintage shows excellent concentration but also remarkable vibrancy, with electric acids framing appealing juiciness.
The grapes for our Panoplie were grown on our certified organic and biodynamic estate vineyard.
The grapes were fermented using native yeasts in a mix of 1500-gallon wooden upright fermenters, open-top tanks and closed stainless steel fermenters. After pressing, the wines were moved into barrel and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation. The Esprit was selected from the vintage's best lots and blended in May 2018, then aged in 1200-gallon French oak foudres for another year before being bottled in July 2018.
