In worthy vintages, Tablas Creek Vineyard produces small quantities of Panoplie: a Mourvèdre-based cuvée from meticulously selected grapes, made in the model of Château de Beaucastel’s Hommage à Jacques Perrin. In 2020, only 840 cases were produced.

The 2021 Panoplie is exclusively available to Tablas Creek Vineyard wine club members. VINsiders who reserved this wine as futures in December 2022 received their wine in the fall of 2023. Ordering the Esprit de Tablas and Panoplie "en primeur" is available exclusively to Wine Club members. One bottle will be released to all VINsider Wine Club members in the Spring 2024 shipment.

Tasting Notes

A densely packed nose of pipe tobacco, red and black fruit, menthol, new leather, and sweet spice. The palate shows related flavors of fruit on the boundary of red and black: currant and black raspberry, with chalky minerality and chewy tannins that suggest lots more will be revealed with time. The long finish has notes of cherry compote, chaparral, and black licorice. Hold for six months if you can, and then enjoy over the next two decades, perhaps longer.

Production Notes

The 2021 vintage came after a chilly, relatively dry winter, the exception being a single storm that dropped more than a foot of rain on us in late January. The cold, dry winter produced a fruit set with smaller clusters and smaller berries, and yields were down about 25% compared to our average. The growing season was ideal, with each hot stretch followed by a cool period that allowed the vines to recover, and that combined with the low yields to produce some of our most intense fruit ever and our highest average acids since the chilly 2011 vintage. We believe that 2021 has all the hallmarks of a blockbuster year.

The grapes for our Panoplie were grown on our certified organic and biodynamic estate vineyard.

The grapes were fermented using native yeasts in a mix of 1500-gallon wooden upright fermenters, open-top tanks and closed stainless steel fermenters. After pressing, the wines were moved into barrel and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation. The Panoplie was selected from the vintage's best lots and blended in July 2022, then aged in 1200-gallon French oak foudres for another year before being bottled in July 2023.
