The 2022 Tablas Creek Vineyard Marsanne is Tablas Creek’s tenth varietal bottling of Marsanne, best known from the northern Rhone's Hermitage appellation, where it is renowned for making some of the world's most age-worthy white wines.

Tasting Notes

A nose of honeydew melon, sweetgrass, and briny minerality. The mouth has gentle but persistent flavors of lemon curd and cantaloupe, nice texture without any sense of weight, and a creamy mineral note that comes out on the long, clean finish. Lovely.

Production Notes

The grapes for our 2022 Marsanne were grown on Regenerative Organic Certified™ and biodynamic estate vineyard.

The 2022 vintage was our third year of drought, but because the rain that we received came early, the vines showed good health though with cluster counts down by about 15%. Two frost events, one in April and one in May, reduced yields by a further 15%, and hit our whites especially hard. A cool first half of the summer was followed by our hottest-ever August and September, producing an early start and an even earlier finish to harvest. The vintage's extremely low yields produced concentrated flavors, noteworthy texture, and intense fruit.

The Marsanne was whole-cluster pressed, and fermented in a mix of stainless steel (to emphasize its clean crisp flavors and minerality) and foudre (to build body and richness). Only native yeasts were used. We fermented it in 600-gallon foudres for a balance of richness and brightness, then chose the lots for our varietal bottling, returned it to large wood for a few more months, and bottled it in June 2023.
