The Tablas Creek Vineyard Patelin de Tablas is a Paso Robles take on a classic Rhône blend: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Counoise, and (for the first time) Terret Noir. The wine incorporates fruit from several of the top Rhône vineyards in Paso Robles, each vineyard selected for its quality. Like many red wines from the Rhône Valley, it is based on the dark fruit, mineral and spice of Syrah. To that Syrah, we incorporate the brightness and fresh acidity of Grenache, the structure and meatiness of Mourvèdre, and a small addition of Counoise and Terret Noir for complexity.

Since the 2021 vintage we have packaged a small portion of our Patelin de Tablas wines in 3L bag-in-box. This package carries a significantly lower carbon footprint (84% less!) than glass bottles while also offering advantages in preservation, storage, and portability. Each full box weighs just 7 pounds (four glass bottles containing the same amount of wine weigh 11 pounds) and because the bag inside the box deflates as wine is poured out, it will stay fresh in your fridge for several weeks after you open it. For the full background on our decision to be one of the first artisan wineries in California to try this package, see Jason's piece on our blog.

Tasting Notes

A nose of licorice and crushed rock, blackberry, soy, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, black raspberry and mineral flavors with a Syrah-driven pancetta-like meaty note. The finish is deep and long, with bright acids, chalky tannins, and a chaparral-like wild herb note that reverts finally back to the licorice note the wine started with. Complex and lingering. Although in bottle this wine could be aged for up to a decade, in box we recommend that it be consumed in the first 6-12 months.

Production Notes

Grapes for the Patelin de Tablas are sourced from five regions in Paso Robles. Three are limestone-rich: the warmer, higher-elevation Adelaida District near Tablas Creek, the cool, coastal-influenced Templeton Gap to our south, and the moderate, hilly El Pomar to our south-east. These regions provide structured, mineral-laced fruit and excellent acidity. We also source fruit from the warmer heartland of the Paso Robles AVA: the Estrella and Geneseo Districts, whose mixed sandy loam soils produce juicy, vibrant Syrah.

The 2022 vintage was our third year of drought, but because the rain that we received came early, the vines showed good health though with cluster counts down by about 15%. A cool first half of the summer was followed by our hottest-ever August and September, producing an early start and an even earlier finish to harvest. The vintage's extremely low yields produced concentrated flavors, noteworthy texture, and intense fruit.

All varietals for the Patelin de Tablas were fermented in a mix of upright oak fermenters and stainless steel tanks and aged in 1500-gallon oak upright tanks for another six months before bottling in July 2023.
